South Africa’s most famous race will again bring together a huge field with 20 of the nations best and most promising horses set to do battle in the 2200 metre Group 1 affair. This year’s edition has the intriguing angle of a three-year-old star taking on the older horses and punters are siding with the new kid on the block as Eight On Eighteen is likely to line up the clear favourite. It is however his first attempt in a race over further than 2000 metres and while he has been most impressive in his 10 career starts to date, he must contend with last year’s winner Oriental Charm and the lightly raced Immediate Edge who has won four starts from six attempts.
Australia
Winx Guineas – Sunshine Coast, Queensland
It is the race which catapulted legendary mare Winx into the racing consciousness and while logic tells us this year’s winner will not reach the same lofty heights, there is plenty to play for on the Sunshine Coast this weekend. Mister Bianco and Millie De Lune had vastly different fortunes at the barrier draw but that hasn’t turned oddsmakers off installing the former an outright favourite from the wide alley. They are however the clear two market leaders and expected to be in the finish of this Group 3 contest.
Japan
Kitakyushu Kinen – Kokura, Japan
For the sprinting fans attention will turn to Japan on Sunday as they host the final Group 3 of the racing weekend. Lord Four Aces will be looking to break a trio of second placings and is the early fancy from a wide barrier. A typically open market is likely to follow however with the likes of Yoshino Easter and Abu Qir Bay both expected to start in single figures as feature racing heads to the southern end of Japan.
